An Acton Elementary Studio (ES) is more like a close-knit neighborhood than any "school" or homeschool group.
The main goal is for learners to explore, create, and build — both themselves and the world around them. In a safe environment and through a self-learning process, learners experience the relationship between freedom and responsibility, discover their Hero’s Journey, develop long lasting friendships, and participate in a hardworking community with a culture of inquiry.
A strong tribe inspires, equips, and connects young heroes as learners shift from “my feelings, right now” to “longer range goals and getting along with others." Most importantly, an ES Guide never answers questions, and instead offers choices, challenges, and responsibility — growing smaller every day until she or he no longer is needed in the studio.
This studio serves learners who are roughly 8 to 12 years old.
Learners progress at their own pace with adaptive, game-based software for math and other essential skills. They select books to read and review, while also developing their ability to speak, think, and write through interactive, game-based strategies designed to enhance key communication skills.
Learners engage in hands-on projects and real-world challenges, fostering curiosity across subjects like STEM, history, and the arts. Through collaboration and exploration, they develop problem-solving skills, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. These experiences not only spark new interests but also build confidence and resilience as they tackle meaningful challenges.
Who were the heroes of the past? What difficult choices did they face? These are just some of the questions that guide learners on their journey as they explore world history, the human experience, and geography.
We promise that heroes will discover a calling that can change the world by learning to become their best selves. This journey involves navigating challenges and tough decisions, shaping habits that build strong character traits such as grit, curiosity, independence, and a growth mindset—equipping them with everything needed to reach their full potential.
Learning thrives when it is both enjoyable and challenging. Embracing rigor is an essential step in saying “Yes” to the Hero’s Journey, where growth comes through perseverance and discovery. The Elementary Studio serves as the gateway for your child to embark on this transformative adventure, building a foundation for a lifetime of curiosity and resilience.
